Learning About Sound Design with Nikos Mavrommatis
Nikos Mavrommatis, a sound designer and music composer for sound to television, film, radio, and web came to meet with the 3rd graders at Hawthorne ES! He has his own company called Circus Act and his biggest client is Cartoon Network Latin America. He shared his work informing students on what it takes to become a sound designer and to consider it as a career path.
He presented the making of a Cartoon Network anti-bullying promotional spot from inception to completion. This process involves a lot processes and professionals to come together! Thank you Nikos for inspiring and engaging our students to be creative and use their imagination in a structured, professional way!

Skype Collaboration In the Library!
Our Kindergarten students practice the difference between questions and statements while meeting with a 6th grade language arts class!
Skype with Elkmont HS, Alabama for Dot Day!
Our students enjoyed meeting kids from Elkmont HS on Sept 15th via Skype. Thank you to technology integration Specialist Nikki D. Robertson for arranging this awesome meeting! Here is an interesting tidbit: Elkmont HS is not exclusively a HS. It actually has grades K-12! The students at Elkmont are involved in a project based learning project to figure out how to best re-use a piece of vacant property in their area! Great job Elkmont! #YOUMATTER and you are really making a difference in the lives of others!

Feriel Feldman, Master Storyteller, Visits our School!
Feriel Feldman, retired theater teacher and Past President of the Southern Order of Storytellers came to Hawthorne ES to share the art of storytelling with all of our students. She crafted an anti-bullying theme through her telling of two Halloween stories: “The Ugly Pumpkin”, by Daniel Horowitz and the Jewish Folktale, 29 Witches. Storytelling is as much about the audience as it is about the storyteller. The Hawthorne students eagerly participated. They followed the teller’s lead and did not miss a beat while focusing on her every word and responded accordingly.
Feldman was enthusiastically received by all of the K-5 students, staff, and faculty! According to Feldman, there is much research showing that the human brain is wired for stories and also, that the ability to tell stories enhances a child’s ability to learn and develop. To learn more about the upcoming storytelling festival in January which includes a whole day of activities for children, log onto the Southern Order of Storytelling website http://southernorderofstorytellers.org/ .
We want to thank our Teacher Support Specialist Diane Robinson for connecting us with Feriel Feldman and we want to thank Ms Feldman for taking the time out of her busy schedule to share her stories with the hornets!

Students Taking Turns with the IPAD Mini!
The students are experimenting with the characters in the Puppet Pals 2 app. They learned how to create original characters, how to choose appropriate background settings and how to create original stories using their background knowledge and their imaginations!
Hawthorne ES Goes to the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl!
The 202-2013 Reading Bowl Team met once a week for about an hour. Students each received KidBlog accounts where they wrote their practice questions under the appropriate book entry. They enjoyed using the blog and preferred it to the paper and pencil method. One advantage to writing practice questions on the blog is that the site is easily accessed as a study guide!
This blog was kept private and while we would have liked to collaborate with another group, we could not find a group willing to do this with us. While we did not place this time around, the students now understand what the reading bowl is and they will be less nervous next time around!
I am very proud of all of the students for their hard work and dedication to reading!

Student Video Project Collaboration!
These fourth graders asked their language arts teacher for permission to create a video as a response to their reading. Together they wrote the script, which was an alternate storyline to the book they read in their reading group. I saw the girl in the green shirt take a leadership role as the director and her peers deferred to her every step of the way. Directing came naturally to her! I'm really glad these students showed initiative by coming up with this alternate classroom project. Their teacher was very supportive of them. I gave them a flip camera and taught them how to edit the video but they soon learned that what seems simple can take some unexpected turns and that you have to leave extra time to complete the final product!.

Fun With the "My Sketch" app!
"My Sketch" is such a fun app. It turns photos into pencil sketches. There is a lot of flexibility with the selection of the sketch style. The students were amazed by this app. They now understand that they can use it when they are going after the sketch effect in a project. But also, they are excited to just use it at home for fun!!!

Author Margie Palatini Skypes in for a Student Interview!
In order to get ready for the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI index), our students focused on researching their interests to learn about possible future career opportunities. This was a collaborative team effort between the school counselor, the technology teacher, the school librarian (me), and the classroom teachers.
The students used a software program to take them through various modules to help them reflect on their strengths and aptitudes. Once they identified a possible career, their task was to find someone working in that field and conduct an interview.
The student in this picture said that she knew she wanted to become a writer so I contacted author Margie Palatini who generously donated her time via Skype for this amazing career project!
